Everything from the look of their clothing to their religion was really thought out, but you get the feeling that is just a cosmetic thing. Sure, the ape culture and society is fleshed out amazingly well. There really isn¿t any social commentary in this film. That isn't the case with this new Planet of the Apes. Add to that a shocking twist ending that no one was expecting, and you have a sci-fi classic that is still entertaining to this day. Something that made the original film so interesting was the comparison that could be made between the human/ape relations in the movie to the real-life racial tensions in the US. So that doesn't sound too different from the original, but the moment that we are introduced to the monkeys things start to go bad. When his monkey goes missing in a mysterious space storm, he launches himself after the simian and crash lands on the horrible Planet of the Apes. Mark Wahlberg replaces Charlton Heston here, as a different astronaut by the name Leo Davidson who trains monkeys for spaceflight. The Movie This new Planet of the Apes takes the core idea of the story (human astronaut lands on a planet controlled by talking monkeys), but twists it and "reimagines" it into a new movie with quite a different theme. The film did some things very well, but it didn't really have the spirit that made the original so interesting. When I finally finished watching Tim Burton's version of the story, I walked out with mixed feelings.

I've seen the originals more times than I can remember, still have many of the Planet of the Apes magazines from the 70's, and have seen all of the episodes of the short-lived TV series. Being a fan of all things Planet of the Apes, I was eagerly looking forward to the 2001 remake of the classic.
